Haven for Hope HonoredIn March, the American Institute of Architects selected 18 recipients of the 2011 Housing Awards. Haven for Hope was honored with the AIA National Housing Award in the Specialty Housing category and the AIA National HUD/Secretary Award. Haven for Hope is credited as the largest, most comprehensive Homeless Transformation Campus in the country. The City Unveils New Property and Evidence BuildingCity officials will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, April 18 at 10 AM to mark the official opening of the San Antonio Police Department's new Property and Evidence Facility located off Hwy 90 and Frio City Road at 555 Academic Court. The 170,000 square foot facility was renovated to house a 112,500 square foot property and evidence storage warehouse, administrative office space, and a vehicle storage building. The project included extensive demolition of the existing structure, new MEP systems, a new elevator, new roof, site improvements, and complete interior renovations. Read more |

UTSA Harnesses Solar EnergyUTSA received $1.08 million in Department of Energy stimulus funds distributed by the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) to install solar panels on two buildings at UTSA's Main Campus. The project was made possible because of one of four solar-energy grants that will enable solar panel installations in San Antonio. In addition to UTSA, the City of San Antonio, St. Phillip's College and the University of Texas Health Science Center received funding for solar initiatives. Read more |

Green Efforts RecognizedThe City singled out the best in green building with awards to top projects that save water and energy at the 3rd Annual Green Building Awards. From affordable homes built by students to veterinary buildings, the awards went to projects that took extra steps to improve energy performance and water conservation. Several retrofit projects recognized included the Colonnade Centre, which received LEED certification for existing buildings; and the Walzem Family YMCA at the site of a shuttered Albertson's grocery store won a Commercial Construction honorable mention.
